Change admin username in wordpress for security

When you install new wordpress to create your website then the after setup the default admin username created is “admin” unless you specified any different username. This is the main admin user having full control over website and can access all the sections of website.

It is recommended to change admin username to something secure which cannot be guess by any one or hackers. Because using the correct admin username hackers can attach with bruteforce to break the admin login.

You cannot directly change the WordPress admin username from admin area. You can follow below steps to change admin username. Make sure you have secure username with a combination of Alpha Numeric characters like “Simo2312”.

Follow simple Steps to Change Admin Username in WordPress :

  1. Login to your WordPress admin using the admin account details.
  2. After login, select “users” area from left navigation panel, and click on “Add New User” to create new admin user.
  3. Provide all required details for the new username and choose “administrator” in the “Role” drop down menu. Also make sure that your password is strong having more than 10 to 12 characters!
  4. Once done adding all the details, save and logout.
  5. Now Login again using your new username and password created.
  6. Navigate again to the “Users” area.
  7. Click the username called “admin” and then select “delete” from the dropdown menu, then click apply.
  8. WordPress will prompt you and ask about the articles posted under the the previous “admin” user. Select the option “attribute all posts and links to” and select your new administrator. When you are ready click “Confirm Delete”.
  9. Also please note that the display name of your new admin user account should also be different to the username. So it is not visible in front end.

You have changed the username successfully without going to database and by just creating new user. This will prevent your website from brute force attack.
